Last weekend, Sam Hallowell and Mike Costello did some team training on Rosebud, a custom 34′ catamaran in Newport Rhode Island. They joined Rosebuds project manager Nat Henrickson and Lucian Moore for the annual Sail for Hope in Newport, which is a twenty mile race around Conanicut Island. Conditions were 20 to 25 with gusts in the 30’s with flat water which were the ultimate conditions for Rosebud. They were the last start, starting over 45 minutes behind the first class and yet the team of four still managed pass most of the 77 strong fleet, to the first turing mark around Beavertail. Upwind Rosebud was sailing 17 knots, and when they rounded the speed quickly jumped up to mid to high 20’s. They quickly extended their lead, but through the second jibe off of Dutch Island, the main violently split in two. The team quickly furled the spinnaker and secured the tattered main. They sailed the remaining way around the island under the jib. Sam and Mike had a blast and got a great feel for for large catamaran sailing. The team is in the process of obtaining a new main for further training on Rosebud later this fall and next spring.
